R. coeloneuron

Availability: in stock

A new and somewhat puzzling introduction.  As pictured in Sichuan Rhododendron of China this looks like a splendid new species with pink to purplish flowers and darker flecks.  The foliage is rather similar to that of R. wiltonii but with a bistrate (ramiform upper layer) versus a unistrate indumentum on the underside.  Recent introductions from C Sichuan of what was thought to be this species have turned out to be just extreme forms of wiltonii (extremely nice! – see the wiltonii listed in this catalog).  Recent collections of this species in N Guizhou and what are probably this species (or denudatum?) in N Yunnan and S Sichuan match the description of coeloneuron perfectly.  This species may be a link between the closely related subsections Argyrophylla and Taliensia as it shares distinguishing features of both groups.  Native to mixed forests from 4,000 to 7,500 ft. in S Sichuan, NE Yunnan and N Guizhou, China.  This should make a beautiful foliage plant.

1995sd224  PW#48:RSBG  (0?\R1?\4).  Grown from seed collected wild in N Guizhou, China by Peter Wharton at 5,150 ft.  This should be in every collection.  NOTE:  Comparable PW# collections of this species may be substituted if necessary.

1995sd230  PW#009:RSBG  (0?\R1\4).  A recent introduction with beautiful foliage.  The upper surface of the leaves with heavily impressed veins and a dense brownish indumentum on the lower.   Pink to purplish flowers in early to mid-spring.  Large plants grown from seed collected wild at 4,400 ft. in N Guizhou, China by Peter Wharton
