Large and stiffly upright evergreen shrubs or trees with deeply fissured bar,.  The leaves are bullate, convex, and have a recurved margin.  The flowers (early to mid-summer) are similar to those of typical arboreum in shades of crimson to pink.  A striking plant in habit and foliage, suitable only for mild gardens.  The only rhododendron native to the island of Sri Lanka where it occurs on the tops of mountains from 3,000 to 8,000 ft.
