Shrubs or small trees, 5 to 20 ft.  Flowers (April) white, white flushed rose, creamy white, with or without a red-colored blotch and flecks.  Lower elevation forms are tender in cold climates.  Found in subtropical mixed forests and thickets from 7,500 to 11,ooo ft.  China, N Myanmar (Burma).

1975/060  'George Taylor'  Wakehurst  (+10\R1\6).  Evergreen shrubs blooming in early spring.  Very rare in cultivation.  This is the 1971 Award of Merit form with white flowers and a red-purple blotch and spots.

 

1980/041  F#27698:Borde Hill (+10?\R1\3).  Light pink flowers with no blotch in mid-spring.  Narrow and glossy deep green leaves on this rarely seen species.
