PLEASE NOTE: Although the photo album is set up as a catalog, there is no pricing or availability data included here, so please refer to the most recent sales catalog for such information (the "in stock" reference listed next to "Availability" is not necessarily correct - please check the catalog). We have used the 'Product Code' data field to record the accession number of the plant shown in the first photograph of each entry, when such information is available. The photograph is only a representation of one example of a species and may not be the same plant that is currently available for sale through the mail order catalog, so be careful to check the accession numbers.
This photo album of rhododendron species shows the wide range of colors and flower shapes found in the genus Rhododendron. The album also acts as an aid for those interested in purchasing plants through the mail order catalog published by the RSF; although the album does contains many more images than are included in each catalog. Under each image (after clicking on a specific species) there is a general description of the rhododendron species written by Curator Steve Hootman (shown above and thus the reference to "my collection" which means the plant in question was collected on an expedition of which Steve was a member). Under the description is a list of individuals in the RSF rhododendron collection that have a unique accession number. For example, Rhododendron aberconwayi has four accessions listed with the first one being 1964/015 'His Lordship.' The number 1964/015 is the accession number and 'His Lordship' is a selection of that species that was worthy of naming.
A photo album of companion plants that are often available through the mail order catalogs is also included but many photos for these are not available yet. The photo album as a whole is a work in progress and the RSF staff is grateful to our webmaster who has dedicated many volunteer hours to creating it!
To view a specific species, click on the links below and then locate the particular plant you are interested in to view an image and some information regarding that species.
You will also see links to pictures taken on specific dates at species identification courses given by Steve Hootman and archived on the Vancouver Rhododendron Society website. These are useful to indicate the timing of blooming although this will vary from year to year.
