Rounded evergreen azaleas, often wider than high.  The elliptic to ovate leaves are covered with long soft hairs.  The broadly funnel-shaped flowers (mid-spring) are lilac-pink to purplish, typically with spots and often fragrant.  This evergreen azalea is fairly heat tolerant but rare in gardens.  Quite distinct and attractive.  Native to Japan where it occurs in forests and thickets.  Formerly known as macrosepalum.

1965/447  ‘Linearifolium’  Leonardslee  (0\R1\4).  The famous form of this species with incredibly narrow “crinkly” leaves that are matched by the long and narrow lavender petals of the unusual flowers.  Best in light shade.

1977/540  Warren Berg  (0).  Vigorous Obtusum type azalea with large, up to three-inch, markedly soft hair leaves and late May flowers of lilac, prominently splotched purple.

1982/118 ‘Ladylocks’  Hill (+5\R1\4). Lovely fragrant lavender flowers on this Polly Hill selection from Japanese seed.

1982/134  Moscow Main BG  (0).
