Compact but upright evergreen shrubs.  The stems are covered with a densely shaggy coat of red-brown hairs.  The attractive shiny green leaves are clustered at the ends of the branches in pseudowhorls on short shaggy petioles so that they appear to come almost directly from the stem. The leaves are smooth underneath except for a dense coating of shaggy hairs on the midrib.  The flowers (late spring to early summer) are pink to rose with a deeper blotch.  A stunning foliage plant, as famous for its lack of flower production as for its distinctive appearance.  Native to W Sichuan where it occurs in various habitats from 7,500 to 11,500 ft.
