Large evergreen shrubs or trees.  A distinct and rare “big-leafed” species, the hardiest in this subsection.  Leaves up to nine inches long with a velvety gray to pale cinnamon indumentum below.  The flowers (mid-spring) are white, white flushed pink, pale pink or rose, often with spots and a reddish blotch.  An impressive and relatively hardy large-growing species.  Native to woodlands in W Sichuan, China from 7,500 to 10,800 Ft.

 

1975/165  Frye:Wood  (-10\R1\5).  White flowers with a maroon blotch.

 

1977/201  Fred Robbins  (-5).  The hardiest of the Falconeris, sacrificing grandeur of leaf, but maintaining and distinct character with thick, pale brown indumentum coating the leaves.  It has white flowers with a bright red blotch in early May.
