Compact rounded evergreen shrubs or small trees with attractive peeling reddish bark.  The flowers (early to mid-spring) are scarlet to blood-red or crimson, with darker nectar pouches.  The leaves have a thick fawn to dark brown indumentum on the underside.  Native to the eastern Himalayas where it is found in various montane habitats from 10,000 to 14,000 ft.
