Shrubs or small trees to 20 ft.  Flowers (early to mid-spring) are lilac-blue, lavender, rose-purple, pink, rose, or magenta with darker blotch and flecks.  Distinctive lanceolate leaves are bullate and have a felted white indumentum on the under surface.  Occurs in woodlands only around Moupin in Sichuan, China from 4,000 to 8,500 ft.

 

 

1965/279  W#4266  Borde Hill  (-10).  Distinctive plant with bullate dark green leaves covered beneath with whitish indumentum.  Featuring trusses of purplish- lavender flowers in March-April.

 

1979/179  'Swinhow'  EXB:UBCP  (-10).  Rose-purple flowers with a darker blotch and flecks.  AM 1963.

 

1993sd241  SICH#929-QUA  (-5?)  Seedlings from seed collected in Shimian County, Sichuan, China at 6,800 ft.  Parent plant growing in sun on a steep north-facing hillside with other rhododendrons, maples and viburnums.  Nice large plants.
