Compact and wide-spreading evergreen shrubs with long hairs on the elliptic to obovate leaves.  The large funnel bell-shaped flowers (mid-summer) are red to pink, purplish or white.  A free-flowering, late blooming evergreen azalea with good heat tolerance and attractive foliage.  Native to open woodlands around 1,000 ft. in S Japan.

 

1980/014  USNA#40245-C  (+5\R1\2).  Light pink flowers on this clone collected wild at sea level on Yakushima, Japan.

 

1998/736  USNA#57106  (+5?\Rf1\2).  White flowers on this clone collected wild on Ioiima Island, south of Kagosgima, Japan.

 

2000sd169  RSBG  (+5\R1\2).  An evergreen azalea with a low mounding habit and red to pinkish or white flowers in mid-summer.  Quite heat tolerant and good for areas where other species perform poorly due to heat and humidity.  Successful in the eastern USA.  These are grown from seed collected wild on Yakushima, Japan.
