eclecteum

Large evergreen shrubs with attractive reddish brown to purple-gray flaking bark.  The glabrous oblong-obovate leaves appear almost sessile on their short petioles.  The blossoms generally appear very early in the season but are quite variable in this as well as flower color.  They range from white, pink, rose, purple, salmon, red and yellow, to various shades of each and even bicolored forms.  Often marked with flecks and blotches, sometimes heavily.  Susceptible to powdery mildew which may partially defoliate the plant in severe cases.  Native to Upper Myanmar and China (W Yunnan, SE Xizing and SW Sichuan) in various montane habitats from 10,000 to 14,000 ft. (See Species Profile:  April 1995 Newsletter).
