formosum

1969/099  Windsor  (+15).  One of the heat tolerant Maddeniis, this one of relatively small 2-3 inch leaves and white flowers with a yellow throat.

2001/147  Glendoick:Schick  (+10\R2\5).  A floriferous and relatively hardy maddenia.  This came in as “red form” but I have not seen it in flower.

formosum var. formosum

Compact to open-growing evergreen shrubs with bristly young growth. The narrowly elliptic dark green leaves are also bristly on their margins. Large, openly funnel-bell-shaped flowers in mid- to late spring. These range in color from white to white flushed pink, often with a yellow blotch and some fragrance. One of the hardiest of the maddenias, worth attempting in a sheltered position in the maritime Pacific Northwest for example. Quite floriferous and easy if provided with good drainage. Native to NE India where it occurs along rivers and in forests from 2,000 to 6,000 ft.

1965/370 (Iteophyllum Group)  Brodick (+5\R2\4). Plants formerly known as iteophyllum have extremely narrow leaves typically only one half inch wide. More compact in a sunny location. Very unique.

1966/638  Brodick  (+15).  Relatively hardy, willow-leaved Himalayan species of the Maddenii group.

1981/122  RBGE:KOL  (+10 to +5?\R2\6).  Scarlet in bud opening to white flushed pink fragrant flowers.

1998/012  ‘Khasia’  C&H#320:Glendoick  (+10\R2\4).  An outstanding selection, this Award of Merit form has large, slightly fragrant white flowers flushed with deep yellow in the throat.

1998/098  Greig:Gerdemann  (10\R2\4).  As for 1999/092.  Jim Gerdemann's hardiest form.

1999/092  RBGE:Gerdermann  (+10\R2\4).  Large funnel-shaped white-flushed rose flowers in mid-spring.  Jim's "best flower" form.  Requires well-drained soil.

formosum var. inaequale

Open-growing to fairly compact evergreen shrubs with bristly branchlets.  The margins and the petioles of the leaves are also typically bristly.  The large and extremely fragrant, openly funnel bell-shaped flowers (mid-spring to early summer ) are white with a yellow blotch.  An ideal species for pot culture in colder climates as it is one of the most fragrant of rhododendrons.  Requires excellent drainage.  Native to NE India where it occurs in a wide variety of habitats from 2,000 to 6,000 ft.

1970/185  LAM  (+5\R2\6).  Large fragrant white flowers with a yellow blotch.

1971/085  (inaequale)  LAM  (+32).  White scented flowers over three inches long

1998/002   A rare maddenia with large fragrant white flowers. This was collected by Peter Cox in NE India. Requires excellent drainage.  (+15\R2\5)
