Large and vigorous evergreen shrubs with smooth peeling, reddish-brown bark. The leaves of this species are rather similar to those of its close relative – R. nuttallii, differing in its scales and leaf color. The spectacular, large and funnel-shaped, fragrant flowers (early to mid-summer) are white with a yellow or greenish throat. This species has been introduced quite often from many different locations in the past several years and there is some confusion as to the identity of many of these collections as some forms of this species seem to be close to R. nuttallii which grows in the same area.Mostforms are quite distinct however, and this is proving to be a fantastic new plant for mild climates or container.Native to S Yunnan, Guizhou and adjacent N Vietnam where it occurs as an epiphyte and on rocks and cliffs in montane forests from around 6,500 to 8,000 ft.
1996sd551SEH#227:RSBG(+20?\R2\6).Our first offering of this species. These are vigorous cutting-grown plants from our original seedlings from my 1995 expedition to China. This form is quite distinct from R. nuttallii with large bold foliage and beautiful large flowers.Excellent drainage required.
