Large evergreen shrubs or small trees with stunning smooth and shiny bark colored purple-red with a silvery sheen.  The oblanceolate leaves are smooth and three to five inches long.  The flowers (early to mid-spring) are rose-purple to pale rose or white flushed rose (rarely sulfur-yellow).  They usually have some purple spotting and are similar in shape to the blossoms of thomsonii.  Native only to SE Tibet from 8,500 to 11,150 ft. in forests and on rock faces.  A great species for the woodland or shaded garden with really striking bark and attractive early flowers.
