This deciduous azalea, formerly known as r. bakeri, is closely related to the well-known flame azalea of the eastern USA.  It is distinguished primarily by its smaller and more compact growth habit as well as its smaller and later season flowers.  The flowers appear after the leaves have fully expanded in June and even July.  These range in color from orange to red or yellow.  An excellent late-blooming species with showy flowers.  Native to the southern Appalachians from Kentucky south to Georgia.
