Deciduous shrubs to 15 ft.  Flowers (June) are bright pink-orange, red-orange to brick red with brown spots.  Rare in the wild and slow to bloom in cultivation.  Late flowering and difficult to propagate.  Yellow-orange leaf color in autumn.  Found only at lower elevations in S Japan.

1998sd280  YK#1173:RSBG  (-5\R1\4).  Large deciduous azalea with unusual and attractive ovate-diamond shaped leaves.  Reddish-orange flowers in early summer.  Grown from seed collected wild at 3,500 ft. on Mt. Hokiyama, Honshu, Japan.  Rarely offered species.  Great azalea for areas with hot summers but also fine in the Pacific Northwest.
